Going through a medical procedure, including cosmetic surgery, is something that should be given much thought. That includes the selection of the surgeon.

While cosmetic surgeons vary depending on the procedure that they specialize on, here are the general considerations in choosing the best one:

Board Certification

It is best to choose from among the members of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Caveat: not just any one of them. He must have undertaken at least 12 years of education and seven years of training post-medical school, and has undergone the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training, which requires a minimum of five years of Specialist Education and Training.

Hospital Privileges

It would be more reassuring to know that the surgeon has the privilege of using the facilities of at least one hospital, especially if the procedure would be undertaken in an outpatient clinic.

Asking Questions

Ask the doctor how many times he had done the particular procedure before, or if he would perform the surgery until the end or another surgeon would take over. Be curious about potential risks and complications, too.

Online forums are the least reliable among sources of information about Plastic Surgeon. Sometimes, the doctors were writing the testimonials themselves. Personally seeing the doctor is the best way to assess his competence.
